This informational resource has been put in place by the GBA physicians group for all patients currently on Medicare or in the process of enrolling in Medicare. It’s important to know who to talk to so that your benefits can be coordinated correctly and without interruption.
When approaching enrollment into the Medicare system you will need to contact Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE to enroll. This should be done 3 months prior to turning 65. Your Medicare benefits will start on the first day of your birthmonth.
If you think you may qualify for Medi-Cal please call the San Francisco Medi-Cal Health Connection to verify eligibility, we cannot do this for you. Enrolling in Medicare may change your status so it’s very important that you do this.
Low Income Subsidy (LIS)
LIS or “extra help” is available to patients that meet certain guidelines. Please visit This Website to apply online or call 1-800-772-1213. We cannot determine whether you will or will not qualify, the Social Security Administration handles this.
Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP)
San Francisco’s Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) is a part of the National SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). The California Department of Aging administers the program, and in San Francisco, we are sponsored by the Department of Aging and Adult Services and the non-profit organization Self-Help for the Elderly.
HICAP is a free service. The program is supported by state and federal funding and individual donations, and the generosity of volunteer counselors. For appointments in San Francisco, call (415) 677-7520.
